Cape Town is extraordinary — but sometimes you need to leave it behind. The drive down the N2 through the Overberg is already part of the experience: mountain passes, fynbos, ocean views, and the R43 winding past Bot River into Hermanus country.
Fisherhaven is the village that Cape Town weekenders dream about. Small enough to feel genuinely remote, close enough to reach on a Friday afternoon. MBIZI lagoon house sits directly on the Kleinrivier Lagoon, with a private pool, a covered braai terrace, and four bedrooms for up to eight guests.
No hotel check-in. No shared pool. No alarm clock unless you want one. Just the lagoon, the mountains, and whatever pace you choose to set.
Everything Within Reach of MBIZI
The Overberg packs remarkable variety into a small area. A weekend barely scratches the surface.
Whale Watching
June to November, Southern Right Whales fill Walker Bay. The Hermanus cliff path is 12 km from MBIZI; during peak season, whales enter the lagoon itself.
Wine Tasting
Hemel-en-Aarde (Heaven and Earth) Valley begins 18 km away. Hamilton Russell, Storm, and Bouchard Finlayson are among the Cape's most celebrated estates.
Wild Horses
Fisherhaven's free-roaming wild herd grazes the lagoon shore year-round. MBIZI guests regularly spot them from the garden — no excursion needed.
Kayaking the Lagoon
MBIZI's garden opens directly onto the Kleinrivier Lagoon. Kayaks are available for guests — paddle into the 17 km-long lagoon before the rest of the world wakes up.
Shark Cage Diving
Gansbaai, 40 km from MBIZI, is the Great White Shark capital of the world. Cage diving trips run year-round — an unforgettable half-day from the house.
Hiking & Fynbos
Fernkloof Nature Reserve in Hermanus offers 60 km of trails through one of the world's richest floral kingdoms. Proteas, ericas, and hundreds of bird species await.
A Perfect Weekend Itinerary from Cape Town
Three days. Infinite ways to spend them — but here is how we would do it.
Drive Down, Settle In, Braai
Leave Cape Town after work. The N2 over Sir Lowry's Pass is spectacular at dusk. Stop at the Hermanus market or the Pick n Pay for supplies, then settle into MBIZI. Light the braai, open a bottle from Hemel-en-Aarde, and fall asleep to the sound of the lagoon.
Whale Path, Wine Valley, Sunset
Morning kayak on the lagoon. Then drive to the Hermanus cliff path — walk as much or as little as you like. Afternoon: the wine estates of Hemel-en-Aarde are 20 minutes away. Return to MBIZI for sundowners on the terrace as the light drops over the Overberg mountains.
Horses, Harbour Market, Slow Drive Home
Early morning walk along the lagoon shore to find the wild horses. Then the Hermanus Harbour Market (Saturdays and Sundays) for fresh seafood and local produce. A slow drive back along the R43 coast road, stopping wherever the view demands it.
