Why Hermanus Is the World's Whale Watching Capital

Every year, Southern Right Whales (Eubalaena australis) travel from sub-Antarctic feeding grounds to the sheltered waters of Walker Bay to calve and nurse their young. Hermanus sits right at the edge of this bay — and the whales come within metres of the shore.

The Hermanus cliff path stretches 12 km along the coast and is rated by WWF as one of the world's best sites for land-based whale watching. At peak season in September and October, multiple whales are visible simultaneously — breaching, lob-tailing, and spy-hopping right below the cliffs.

What makes MBIZI lagoon house particularly special is its position: the house sits directly on the Kleinrivier Lagoon in Fisherhaven. During peak season, Southern Rights regularly enter the lagoon and are visible from the garden — no cliff path, no parking, no crowds required.

Whale Watching Month by Month

The whales are present in Walker Bay from June to November — but each month offers something different.

June

First Arrivals

The first Southern Rights appear in early June. Numbers are lower but sightings are special — the bay feels quiet and wild. Bring a warm jacket for the cliff path.

July – August

Building Numbers

Whale numbers increase steadily. Mothers with calves become visible as newborns gain strength. This is a favourite period for photographers: dramatic winter light and active whales.

September – October

Peak Season

The very best months. Dozens of whales in the bay simultaneously, frequent breaching displays, and the Hermanus Whale Festival in late September draws visitors from around the world.

November

Final Sightings

Numbers thin out as whales begin the return journey south. Sightings become more sporadic, but the bay is quieter — and early summer weather makes this a lovely time to visit.
