The stretch of Western Cape coastline around Hermanus and Fisherhaven is one of the most varied walking landscapes in South Africa. In a single day you can walk mountain fynbos, cross coastal strandveld, follow cliff paths above a whale-watching bay, and finish barefoot in a warm lagoon.
Fernkloof Nature Reserve rises directly above Hermanus, with over 60 km of marked trails winding through some of the world's finest fynbos — over 1 400 plant species in 1 400 hectares, including extraordinary concentrations of Proteas, Ericas and Restios.
Below the mountains, the 12 km Cliff Path follows the coastline with uninterrupted views of Walker Bay. This is where Southern Right Whales are watched from June to November — sometimes so close inshore that the path falls silent as walkers stop to watch.
The Best Walks from MBIZI lagoon house
All distances from MBIZI. None require more than a 20-minute drive to the trailhead.
Hermanus's mountain reserve protects over 1 400 plant species and offers trails from short botanical walks to full-day ridge hikes. The Contour Path gives panoramic views over Walker Bay. Cape Sugarbirds work the Proteas year-round. Spring (Aug–Oct) is extraordinary.
The most famous walk in the Western Cape runs the full length of Hermanus above Walker Bay. Rocky outcrops, cliff faces and grassy headlands alternate along a path that doubles as the world's finest land-based whale watching vantage point from June to November.
The strandveld fynbos between Fisherhaven and the lagoon mouth is walkable from MBIZI with no transport. Low vegetation, wild horses grazing, and direct beach access at the lagoon mouth where the Kleinrivier meets Walker Bay. Early morning is exceptional.
The village of Stanford on the Klein River offers flat river walks through fynbos and riverine bush. Several farm estates offer walking trails through vineyards and orchards with views across the Overberg mountains. The historic village itself is worth the 4 km loop.
The cave network at De Kelders gives access to dramatic cliff-top walking with Walker Bay and Dyer Island in view. Southern Right Whales are visible here too, and the African Black Oystercatcher nests on the rocks below. Completely uncrowded.
Paddle the 17 km Kleinrivier Lagoon at your own pace — included in every MBIZI stay. The upper estuary is reedy and calm, rich in birdlife and completely still before 8am. An hour's paddle before breakfast is one of the great Overberg experiences.
Beyond the Trails: The Overberg by Day
The walking is the point — but the Overberg rewards full days spent exploring.
